The Lord Jesus speaks to a Pharisee in John chapter 3…
Perhaps you remember, Nicodemus comes to him at night, and the Lord Jesus says, “Truly I tell you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.”
We’re talking about entering the Kingdom of God, entering the Kingdom of heaven. You need to be born again. You need to become a child. And this is not to do with innocence or the romance of youth; no, it’s to do with rubbish-ness, which takes us right back to the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount, where the Lord Jesus says that we are blessed if we are rubbish—poor in spirit. We are blessed if we cry and are sad about our sin. We are blessed if we’re weak. We are blessed if we’re starving hungry in our lack of righteousness and gagging with thirst for righteousness.
That’s good news for rubbish people like us!
