The officers answered, “No one ever spoke like this man!” – John 7:46
Those words are more true than probably the officers knew. Never a truer word was spoken by those officers than what they said there.
And John intentionally frames it in that way for that reason. Truly, no one—genuinely—ever spoke like this man. Again, it goes back to the prophetic role of the Lord Jesus we’ve mentioned before, and it coincides with some in the crowd calling him the Prophet. This is the preaching work of Christ—his speaking God’s will and doing God’s will, so much so that he is rightly called not just one who obeys the word of God but one who is the Word of God. And since that’s who he is, then it’s no surprise that his speaking is so mesmerising.
