“When the wine ran out.” It’s a striking way for John to put it. It’s an inevitability. We know from the doctrine of God’s sovereignty that he plans everything. John knew that too. He puts it this way to remind his readers that everything is planned out by God. That wine was meant to run out in order for this miracle to take place. So, he even puts it in this way: “when the wine was gone”, meaning, this was meant to be.
