Do you see the Lord Jesus as the Messiah, (as the Christ, as the Anointed One, as the one promised throughout the Old Testament, as the one who all the kings are meant to point to)? Is so, you must lay hold of these great promises from 2 Samuel 7 and see that if the Lord Jesus is the son of David, then he fulfils them all…
The Father has established the house of David; even though the original David’s days on this earth are over and he is resting with his ancestors, God has raise up the Lord Jesus, David’s offspring to succeed him—David’s own flesh and blood—and the Father has established Christ’s kingdom. Jesus is building a house for God’s Name on this earth, and it’s not one made of bricks, and God is establishing his throne—the throne of the Lord Jesus’ kingdom—forever. God is his Father, and he is God’s Son.
And the amazing thing that happened to the Lord Jesus, as he fulfilled this role of the son of David, was that he was treated as one who had done wrong—as prophesied in 2 Samuel 7—and the Father—as he promised to—punished him with a rod wielded by men, with floggings inflicted by human hands.
And yet what we also see is that the Father’s love was never taken away from him, so that the house of David, and the kingdom of David—in Christ—is enduring forever before God; the throne of David—in Christ—is established forever.[1]
