Isn’t it fascinating that the Lord Jesus chose disciples? Now, we’re talking about church because that’s who the church is. The church are the disciples of Jesus, and the twelve disciples that Jesus had, they were the foundation of the church.
But in other places, all church people are called disciples. So then, we get into something quite juicy…
Why did Jesus choose to have a church at all? And this is where the great mystery takes place. Because, there is marriage Genesis 2, and Paul says in Ephesians chapter 6, he’s talking about Jesus, and the church. So, in a very real sense, it’s not good for Jesus to be alone.
So, Jesus chooses to marry the church, and God would have said to him, “This is going to be awful. They’re going to be awful people. They’re going to betray you. They’re going to be unfaithful. They’re not going to glorify you as they should. They’re going to sin left, right, and centre.”
But Jesus says, “No, I want to marry them. I want to marry the church.”
You know, what was required for Jesus to marry the church was the cross. That Jesus, our Lord and God, died. That, reverently, we can say, “God died so that we could marry him.” So we know that he loves us.
And so that’s why, ultimately… he loves us. ‘Tis mystery all!’
