Without the active obedience of Christ, then we’re left only with the disobedience of Adam, our first parent…
He is the one who is our head as soon as we are born. He’s the one we’re connected to by nature. We need to be taken out of Adam and brought into Christ. And of course, we follow suit as soon as we begin to live and breathe. We are those who act out in the way that someone who is related to Adam would be expected to live, someone who is not righteous in the sight of God.
And yet, what we can be given if we trust in the Lord Jesus Christ is His obedience. And that is not dependent on our behaviour in any way. Of course, we would expect someone who was credited with the righteousness of Christ to begin living righteously, but that is not the righteousness that saves us. Our own righteousness is not the righteousness that saves us. The righteousness that saves us is the righteousness of the Lord Jesus Christ, the active obedience of Christ credited to us.
