Come to Jesus and You Will Not Be Condemned

Let’s remember the central teaching of John 8… Jesus is sinless.

Jesus is the authoritative judge and writer of the law.

Any morality, justice, or ethics done without reference to the Lord Jesus is a waste of time. No, the only right thing is to begin with Jesus.

That is exactly what Jesus is doing here.

By urging the people to cast the first stone if they are without sin, he is effectively saying:

‘I am the judge. I am the one who wrote the Ten Commandments. You may leave if you believe yourselves to be without sin.’

But Jesus does not leave, because he is without sin.

And if you come to Jesus, as this woman found herself before the Lord Jesus, you will not be condemned.

Come to Jesus, and you will not be condemned.

If you do not come to Jesus in this life, then you will be condemned in the next.

Jesus came not to condemn but to save.

So, come to Jesus.

He will not have you stoned or destroyed.

He will not cast you away.

He will welcome you.

But he will say, ‘Go, and from now on sin no more.’

The expectation is that if you have come to the Lord Jesus, then you are repenting of sin and trusting in him and him alone.

You are not trying to sort your own sin out.

Jesus is the answer.

Without Jesus, the wrath of God remains on us, and there are sins we have committed that remain undealt with—whether adultery, idol worship, the worship of other gods, the abuse of God’s reputation, the breaking of his order in work and worship, the dishonouring of parents, murderous hatred, theft, lying, covetousness, greed, or whatever else it may be.

They are sins, and they need to be dealt with.

But come to Jesus, and he will not condemn you.

He will welcome you with open arms.

There is no condemnation for you if you are linked to him.

You can be sent away free from condemnation.

But also be encouraged to sin no more. Now that you have been forgiven of your sins, live in the light of that forgiveness, because John 8 is not licence, it is forgiveness.
