And it wasn’t your piety that caused Christ to die. Paul tells us in Romans 5 that Christ died for the ungodly, so can you see how ridiculous it would be to say, “Oh no, I can’t have Christ die for me because I’m too ungodly, I’m too much of a sinner, I’m not religious enough, I’ve not done enough”? Christ died for the ungodly. If you’re ungodly, then you are qualified for Christ to die for you. ‘While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.’
It’s not difficult to qualify yourself as a sinner—just live a normal day on this earth and you’ll soon see that sin happens all the time, you do it. And if you sin, then you’re a sinner. And if you’re a sinner, then you’re qualified to have Christ die for you. There is no one who should not take God up on this offer of his Son, who should not accept this love that God shows to his people in having his son die for the church while they were still sinners.
