It is a capital mistake to theorise before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.
— A Scandal in Bohemia (Arthur Conan Doyle)
How often wrong assumptions are made about people! “That person hates me because he did this.” or “She didn’t mention that, therefore she must think this.” etc. Do you know that? Have you talked to that person about it? A little learning is a dangerous thing.
People do it with churches too… “Oh, I am writing off this particular leader or this particular person because apparently this has happened and this person said that about them.” Again, have made those conclusions based on hearsay? Do your research. Check your facts. You may end up being correct, but make sure that you remember the dangers of making assumptions based on very little knowledge.
Don’t make your mind up about things before you’ve given these things a fair hearing (John 7:51).
Churches have split over misunderstandings like this. Lives have been ruined over wrong assumptions made.
Failing to hear, refusing to be a fair judge can be disastrous. Speak to someone face to face, it may feel intimidating or scary, but at least then the disaster can be avoided.
